Hello My Friend,
My Midlife Lock-In: Making the Rest of 2026 My Best Chapter Yet
You've probably seen it all over social media lately. Gen Z is doing what they're calling a "lock-in." They look at how much of the year is left, and they lock in. New habits. New focus. No more excuses for the rest of the year.
When I saw this trend, my first thought was: why should Gen Z have all the fun?
Us midlife women, us women over 40, we can lock in too. Honestly, I'd argue we need it more than anybody. So I did my own version. I sat down, looked at where I actually am in my life right now, and built a real, honest list of what I'm focusing on for the rest of 2026.
I want to walk you through it, not so you copy mine line for line, but so you can see what it looks like to build one for yourself.
Why I'm doing this
I'm 49 years old. Over the last four and a half years, I've lost a significant amount of weight, completely on my own, through daily consistency. I still have more of that journey ahead of me. I'm caring for my aging dad. I'm building a newer career. And I am done letting the year just happen to me. I want the rest of 2026 to be something I actually built, on purpose.
A lock-in isn't about being perfect. It's about picking your focus areas and showing up for them, day after day, especially when nobody's watching and nobody would even notice if you skipped it.
Here's my list, in the order it matters most to me right now.
Dad caregiver support and relief
I'm starting here because it's close to my heart. Part of my lock-in is actually researching and applying for caregiver support resources for my dad, instead of just trying to push through it all on my own strength. If you're caring for a parent, a spouse, anyone, hear me on this: looking for support isn't giving up. It's one of the strongest, smartest moves you can make.
Movement
Gym three days a week. At the gym weight machines 35-45 minutes, upper, lower and both. Daily steps, aiming higher on weekends when I have more free time (12K-15K), weekdays (8K-10K). Daily stretching, morning and evening. Squats and dumbbell work through the week. A vibration plate once a day for at least 15 minutes.
I want to be clear about something. These are my numbers, for my body, at my stage of this journey. I'm not sharing them so you copy them exactly. I'm sharing them so you can see what a real, sustainable movement plan looks like, and then go build your own version, for your body, at your starting point.
Nutrition
Real, whole foods. Lean proteins, plenty of vegetables, some fruit, healthier dressings, and staying intentional about hydration. Factor Meals to supplement do to time constaraints. Spike water once a day; Loam Fiber Power adn electrolytes. Homemade protein bars and protein shakes to mix in. This is what's working for me after years of learning what actually sustains me. Nutrition is deeply personal, what works for me might not be the right fit for you, so lean on real food and build something you can actually stick with, not a copy of anyone else's plan, mine included.
Mindset and motivation
Journaling. Brain dumps, getting every worry and task out of my head and onto paper so my mind has room to breathe. Affirmations. A Plan and Prep Sunday every week, using Notion and my Dailee Planner, time blocking so Monday doesn't ambush me. And being more intentional about what I let into my mind, podcasts, books, and yes, social media too, not cutting it out, just being mindful about it.
Taking care of myself
Bloodwork, so I actually know what's going on in my body instead of guessing. I use and swear by Function Health for cost savings and availablility and convenience. Plus Function Medicine Doctor recaps after every appointment. Continuing my life coaching. Lymphatic massage every 6 weeks and staying on top of my supplements. None of these things are life-changing on their own. Together, they're maintenance. And if I don't schedule maintenance for myself, it just doesn't happen. Nobody else is going to book that appointment for me.
Style and beauty
Salon visits, mani/pedis, brows, a consistent AM/PM skincare routine, a red light mask, my weekly everything shower, and dermaplaning. This isn't vanity for me. It's about how I feel when I catch my reflection in the mirror. When I've taken care of myself on the outside, I show up differently everywhere else too.
Career
Coursera courses I actually finish instead of letting sit in a browser tab. Working toward my CAPM certification in project management. Improving my LinkedIn so it actually reflects where I am now, not some outdated version of me from years ago. Consistent podcasting, newsletter and blog posts and social media reels/stories/posts. PLanning to grow my presence adn forma online community for the New Year with retreats to follow.
Downtime
Podcasts, some doom scrolling (yes, I'm being honest about that one), Martha Stewart books and shows, and home updates. This isn't extra to-do. It's permission to actually rest without guilt, instead of feeling like I should be productive every single second.
Experiences
One to three field trips a month, nothing fancy, just getting out of the house and seeing something new. And I'm already planning my next real vacation for January or February. If you've been following along, you know my trip to Folly Beach and Charleston with my son lit something up in me. I want more of that, so I'm putting it on the calendar now instead of waiting for inspiration to strike.
Bringing it all together
That's my full list. Caregiving support. Movement. Nutrition. Mindset. Self-care. Style and beauty. Career. Downtime. Experiences.
A lock-in isn't about doing everything perfectly. It's about deciding, on purpose, what the rest of your year is going to be about, instead of letting it happen to you by accident.
I'm 49. I've lost a significant amount of weight over the last several years, completely through consistency, and I still have more of that journey ahead of me. I'm caring for my aging father. I'm building a newer career. And I am still choosing, every single day, to make this season of my life the best one yet, not despite everything I'm carrying, but right in the middle of carrying it.
Your turn
Here's your homework, if you want it. Sit down this weekend and build your own lock-in list. Not mine. Yours. Where do you want more experiences? What does your career need from you right now? Your mindset? Your body? Your rest?
You don't need Gen Z's version of a lock-in. You need your own midlife version, built around your actual life, your actual goals, and your actual season.
It's never too late to decide the rest of this year is going to count.
Keep glowing. Keep growing. You've got this.
Love, Jax
